But you won't do this for long; instead, you'll be counting down the days until the end of the school year not in anticipation of summer, but in eagerness to see what your life will look like as a full-time copywriter in business for yourself. I wonder if you're surprised to hear that you will adore watching both of your sons play hockey. or that five years from now, you'll sneak away to your bedroom not to sleep (though you still nap) or to watch drama-filled television (though you still watch Grey's Anatomy), but to scream at the refs while watching the Washington Capitals play hockey on TV. Confession time: I'm not good in social situations

Confession time: I'm not good in social situations. I don't like "rising to the occasion," "putting myself out there," or "meeting new people." I'd rather stay in my comfort zone of introversion and observe from the periphery. But here's the thing I keep getting smacked in the face with, both in friendship and in business: The complex task of opening yourself up to what's unknown can bring about the BEST things you've ever experienced. More than fifteen years ago, I gave my phone number to a guy as we walked together out of an office building. That guy? My now-husband @jord27 of nearly eleven years. A kind and thoughtful card left on my desk from a colleague in 2019 led to a blessed friendship with @meganraejay that I never expected but needed so much. And just this past weekend, an offer of a ride to our sons' hockey games in North Dakota brought about validating discussions about the type of business I'm running and the work I'm capable of doing. I see you, friend, out there on the edge of the conversation. I see you with your lawn chair just far enough away from the other mamas at the baseball field. I see you in the school pick-up line, avoiding eye contact with the other parents as you hurriedly grasping your child's hand and walk to your car. But for just a minute, mama, can you think about this? What might happen - what doors in your heart might open - if you just did one small part of your day a little differently? What if you moved your lawn chair over a couple of feet? What if you made eye contact with another mama and smiled, just for a moment? The beautiful things happen by pushing through the hard moments. And I'm proof that without the challenge, the fruit isn't as sweet.

Sometimes, I teach my heart out all day long, and

Sometimes, I teach my heart out all day long, and I come home and write my heart out for my clients in the evening. And other times, I have a not-good-but-not-bad day of teaching, and I come home and encourage a silly tickle-giggle-early-to-bed night with my children. Today, I breathed in the silly and let the work sit undone for the evening. And it was wonderful. And it stretched me, too. Both of these times are good. Both the work-soaked nights and the kid-intensive evenings are needed, are cherished, are a challenge and an achievement and a smile and a sigh. For if we were to experience one without the other, our beautifully messy and complex lives would be far less than what we're capable of. Just in case no one's told you today: we can be many things, mamas. Here's to whoever you were today, and to whoever we'll be tomorrow. 💛
