last time we chatted about the plans for our master bedroom, I revealed our chosen paint color – indigo, specifically Gabardine by Martha Stewart – and in between cuddles with our sick boy this past weekend, i managed to slap some paint on the walls! so, as a reminder, here’s what our bedroom looked like before…
and here is what we are delighted to wake up to each morning – the after!
i am quite obsessed with the results. the color is moody and dark in all the right ways, and i am eager to bring in light-colored linens, vibrant art and metallic elements to finish the room off and truly make it feel like a romantic hideaway.
the details: i had Gabardine by Martha Stewart color-matched at our local Home Depot to Glidden Interior Paint in Eggshell finish. i also picked up some primer, also by Glidden, that I had tinted to maximize coverage. as you can see above, our walls were originally a light sand color, so since we were going much darker with indigo, i felt that tinted primer was the way to go.
the painting process took three days – one day for priming, and one day for each coat of indigo, for a total of two coats of paint – but with the long weekend i had for President’s Day, I was able to get it done (with a lot of help from Jord and my dad, who cared for L).
i am eager to reveal where we are headed next in the process, but before i do, let’s take a look at the to-do list for the room:
– prime and paint the walls indigo
– accent the tray ceiling with a paint treatment (although after falling in love with the contrast between the walls and the white ceiling, i’m not sure how i feel about this idea anymore)
– purchase/build a simple bed frame; sell Hemnes bed and nightstand (to my brother!)
– DIY a tufted, upholstered headboard (fabric color: caramel!), using this tutorial from Little Green Notebook’s Jenny Komenda
– hang white, breezy linen curtains
– bring in metallic items, like a gold bedside table (I picked one up from Target on clearance!), a mirror (perhaps a DIY sunburst mirror?), a chandelier, and sconces
– bring in art, accessories, throw pillows (I found two for $12 on clearance at Hobby Lobby this week!) and throw blankets/quilts
– add new knobs and paint the top of our Hemnes dresser gold
what’s up next: after making a few touch-ups to the ceiling using white paint, i plan to bring in white linen curtains (hung from a gold curtain rod that i ordered online and am eagerly anticipating the arrival of) and bring back in our white bed linens. i am on the hunt for a few items as well, like a throw blanket with a slight pattern/weave in a fun punch of color (yellow?), an antique chair that I can recover and use to create a small seating area by the window, and some nude-colored Euro pillows.
i can’t wait to see how this room evolves!

ooh! love it! So calm and cozy! Its a great shade of blue. I think the metallics and colors will look awesome. I saw a bunch of Threshold items in the Home Clearance section of Target this weekend, a few throws and pillows, though i can’t remember which colors. (p.s. we have the Hemnes bed too!)
Thank you! We’re already loving how the paint color keeps our room a bit darker in the mornings :)
I am OBSESSED with Threshold at Target…you’re tempting me to go shopping!!
We have loved the Hemnes bed, but we are gearing up to sell it to my brother (who’s about to graduate college) so we can get a new bed! I’m really digging IKEA’s Brimnes bed frame with storage, but I need to see it in person to truly decide!
